The BUCHAREST NATIONAL OPERA presented on December 18 and 19 at 6.30 p.m., the premiere of SIMON BOCCANEGRA by Giuseppe Verdi.
The opera in 3 acts and a prologue has been staged for the first time at the Bucharest Opera by Anda Tabacaru-Hogea, with sets and costumes by Catalin Ionescu-Arbore.
After a first version premiered in Venice back in 1857, the second one, set up at La Scala in 1881 was a real success. The romantic story of the 14th century pirate Simon Boccanegra, who became the first Genovese Duke, was turned into an opera by Francisco Maria Piave and Arrigo Boito after the homonymous play by Antonio Garcia Gutierez.
The orchestra, conducted by Ciprian Teodorascu, will accompany some of the best Romanian opera singers: Iordache Basalic/Vicentiu Taranu (Boccanegra), Roxana Briban/Mariana Colpos (Boccanegra's daughter Amelia), Virgil Profeanu / Gabriel Nastase (Gebriele), Pompeiu Harasteanu / Mihnea Lamatic (Fiesco), Sever Barnea / Florin Simionca (Paolo), Stefan Schuller / Paul Basacopol Pietro), while the choir will be conducted by Stelian Olariu.
